Town Board
Purpose: The Town Board is an elected Board responsible for the operations of the town.
Meets: Second Monday of the Month at 7:00 PM, upstairs at the Town Hall

Town Board Subcommittees:

Building Committee
Purpose: Review and decision on new buildings and routine building and equipment purchases on all Town owned properties including the Town Hall, Town Library, Highway Garage and Stoddard Field.
Meets: As needed.

Community Services & Relations Committee
Purpose: Responsible for improving the coordination of services and communications between the Town, County, residents, community groups, and businesses and institutions which reside in our Town including the Fire and Ambulance services.

Finance & Insurance Committee
Purpose: Assist in the Town Budget Process, analyze funding alternatives for significant purchases and capital improvements, recommend investment alternatives for excess and reserve funds, research opportunities for non-Highway Federal, State and County grants and prepare grant applications, evaluate the Town’s insurance requirements and recommend qualified companies to deliver insurance services.

Highway Committee
Purpose: Communications and coordination between the Highway Department and the Town Board.

Planning Board
Purpose: Responsibilities include review/decision of Site Plans, Subdivisions, Boundary Line Adjustments, and Special Permits for Telecommunication Facilities.

Zoning Board of Appeals
Purpose: Responsibilities include the interpretation of the Town Zoning Law, review/decision regarding Variance requests and all Special Permit applications with the exception of Telecommunication Facilities.

Recreation Committee
Purpose: Responsible for the Summer Recreation program, including the swimming program at Adams Point Beach and the crafts program at Stoddard Field, review and recommendation of structural improvements to Stoddard Field.

Assessment Review Board
Purpose: Hears taxpayer's grievances concerning their Real Property Assessments.

Board of Ethics
Purpose: Reviews and decides complaints or questions concerning conflicts of interest for town officials and employees.

Traffic Safety and Security Committee
Purpose: Serves as the Town representative on the Columbia County committee that makes recomendations for changes to local traffic laws to the New York State Department of Transportation.

Senior Citizens--Office of the Aging
Purpose: Serve as the Town representative(s) to the Office of the Aging.

Two of the programs coordinated by this committee are the Senior lunch program on Wednesdays at the Town Hall and Meals on Wheels.

Canaan Day Committee
Purpose: To organize and produce a community event for residents and visitors of all ages to spend a day in the company of friends and neighbors at Stoddard Field.
Meets: As needed to plan event. This committee is composed of local volunteers. New members are always welcome.
