Canaan has a population of less than 1,800 in an area of 36.7 square miles on New York’s border with Massachusetts in northern Columbia County, New York.
The town of Canaan includes parts of East Chatham, the rest of which is in the town of Chatham.
Canaan has a special program for people over 60 years of age. Seniors meet at the Town Hall every Wednesday from 11am-1pm with lunch provided by Meals on Wheels. The meeting provides many special programs and an opportunity to get to know your neighbors.

The Town of Canaan offers various services and to its residents. We are served by both the Chatham Central School District and the New Lebanon Central School District, and have a fair number of local businesses around the town.
